Centro Hispano to help provide nutritious meals to children in low-income areas during the summer months through the Pennsylvania Department of Education Summer Food Service Program.
Reading, PA June 17 – The Centro Hispano Daniel Torres Inc. received approval Thursday from the Department of Education to be a local sponsor of its Summer Food Service Program. As a sponsor the Centro Hispano will provide nutritious meals to children in low-income areas during the summer months. The Centro Hispano will be partnering with the Olivet Boys and Girls Club by providing meals to children participating in summer programming. The Centro Hispano will provide nutritional meals at six Olivet sites within the city including: Clinton St Club, Mulberry St. Club, Oakbrook Club, Pendora Club, the PAL Club, and their satellite site at Holy Spirit in the Centre Park area of Reading. The feeding program will begin on Monday June 22, beginning at 4:30 PM at each location.
“The COVID-19 crisis has placed additional financial strain on our families that were already struggling to put food on the table,” said Michael Toledo, President and CEO of Centro Hispano. “We are excited to be expanding our feeding program with the Olivet Boys and Girls Club to provide nutritional meals for city children in our collective efforts to helping them stay healthy and thrive.”
Chris Winters, President and CEO of the Olivet Boys & Girls Club of Berks County stated, “We are thrilled to be expanding our partnership with Centro Hispano to provide dinner meals to our youth this summer. As Berks County progresses from the yellow to green re-opening phase, we recognize that the challenges and struggles many families are facing are still very much a reality. Our mission as an organization is to serve the youth and their families especially those who need us the most. We will continue to do our part for our community which is made possible due to outstanding community partners, such as Centro Hispano.”
This new feeding program will complement the Centro Hispano and Olivet Boys & Girls Club commitment to addressing food insecurity for children in our community. During the current fiscal year the Centro Hispano has prepared and provided meals to children enrolled through the Early Childhood program of the Berks County Intermediate Unit and also provided weekend meals through Olivet during a joint COVID-19 Pandemic response effort. With this relationship. Olivet Boys and Girls Club and Centro Hispano look to continue to work to address the many needs of the 18,000 children in the City of Reading.
