WYOMISSING, PA – One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and more than 50,000 women in the United States undergo a mastectomy each year. The decision to have breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy is very personal and, for many reasons, women often decide against it.
Knitted Knockers, soft, comfortable knit prosthetics, are handmade with love by volunteers for women who have undergone a mastectomy or other procedure to the breast. They are soft and comfortable, and when placed in a woman’s regular bra, take the shape and feel of a real breast.
The Highlands at Wyomissing and Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County have partnered to provide local women in need with knitted knockers. The Highlands Creative Stitchers, one of only seven registered groups in Pennsylvania to provide Knitted Knockers, has created more than 50 sets to date.
The group works with Reading Hospital and Penn State Health St. Joseph to coordinate distribution to women.
