Sam Barge Joins Berks Youth Chorus As Executive Director

READING, PA (AUGUST 2021) –  The Berks Youth Chorus is pleased to announce Sam Barge as its new Executive Director.  After a year of navigating virtual choral programming as Music Director, Barge now assumes the role of Executive and Artistic Director as the chorus kicks off its 30th anniversary season.

“It’s an honor, especially as we look forward to in-person singing again,” says Barge.  “This is a special organization with a rich tradition, a bright future, and a community of young singers hungry for real-time music making.”

Barge is a native of Marietta, Georgia, and has a deep belief in music as a vehicle for personal growth, civic vitality and social change.  With a degree in vocal performance from the University of North Carolina, and a master’s degree in choral conducting from Temple University, he has worked with community music programs as a choral teacher, vocal instructor and program coordinator.  During this last year as the Berks Youth Chorus Music Director, Barge provided the primary artistic vision for Berks Youth Chorus and reinvented its curriculum to adapt to online learning platforms. Alongside his predecessor Amanda Svetlak, he established the Chorus for Causes initiative, in which singers support local nonprofits like Mary’s Shelter and United Way through music advocacy.

Barge wants to build upon BYC’s deep history of musical achievement, diversify its musical offerings and reach out to every corner of the greater Berks County community.

“All are welcome at Berks Youth Chorus,” he says.  “BYC is a space where creativity, artistry and community meet, and where everyone has a voice.  Come as you are, sing as one.”

While the pandemic continues to present challenges, the Chorus will employ the use of face masks, social distancing and air filters to ensure singer safety. The Chorus also has contingencies in the case that in-person singing becomes untenable again.  “The safety of our singers and their families will always take the ultimate precedent,” Barge says.

Registration for the 10-week, Fall 2021 season of Berks Youth Chorus is open through September 10th.  BYC encourages all families in need to apply for financial aid upon registration.  More information can be found at www.berksyouthchorus.org.  Questions about Berks Youth Chorus programming can be sent to [email protected].
