Upcoming Programs at Wyomissing Public Library

On Saturday, January 21st, the Wyomissing Public Library will welcome the Berks Intercultural Alliance (BICA)  for the first in a three-part series about being Black in Berks County. The first program, which will begin at 1 PM, will focus on The Great Migration and its impact on the county, including the City of Reading. The Great Migration has been referred to as the greatest movements of people in US history as approximately six million Black people moved to the North, MidWest and West between 1910 and 1970 to escape racial intimidation and violence in the South.

Reading residents Frank McCracken and Ramona Turpin will discuss their families’ histories and experiences, and will address how migration has impacted individual lives socially & culturally, as well as the economic and political impact of migration.

Chip Karasin, a founding member of BICA, will be the program moderator.

On Monday, January 23rd, the library will host State Senator Judy Schwank and State Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freyitz for a Town Meeting to discuss their legislative priorities in the new General Assembly session in Harrisburg.

Senator Schwank represents the 11th Senatorial District, which includes the City of Reading, Wyomissing and West Reading, plus Maxatawny Township, Kutztown, Spring, Cumru and the Berks County portion of Adamstown plus 16 other municipalities.

Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freyitz is newly elected to represent the 129th Legislative District which was created last year. The district includes precincts in Reading, West Reading and Wyomissing as well as Sinking Spring and Spring Township.

Renee Dietrich, a member of the League of Women Voters of Berks County, will be the moderator for the meeting.

Both programs are free and open to the public; registration is requested: [email protected] or 610-374-2385. The Wyomissing Public Library is located at 9 Reading Boulevard in Wyomissing.
