Many employers are finding it difficult to attract and retain talented workers. Our panel of experts from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve will explore three specific challenges and offer suggestions about ways we can adapt and be successful in the emerging economy.
Of the 11 metropolitan areas within the Philadelphia Federal Reserve District, with a third of its jobs classified as “opportunity occupations”, Reading has the highest percentage of high paying jobs that don’t require more than a high school education. But will this continue to be an advantage over the next decade?
Nearly one of every five jobs in our region is at high risk of being impacted by automation. These range from clerks in the retail and commercial sectors to workers in our manufacturing and food processing businesses. Can the increase in job opportunities in other sectors in our region compensate for the positions impacted by new technologies?
Keith Wardrip, Community Development Manager for the Philadelphia Federal Reserve will speak about the challenges and opportunities of having a large concentration of high paying jobs that don’t require more than a high school diploma. Lei Ding, Senior Community Development Adviser for the Bank, will focus on the effect of automation on employment. And Oliver Cooke, a Regional Visiting Scholar at the Philadelphia Federal Reserve from Stockton University, will talk about impact that the structure and organization of an industry has on participation in the workforce.
