Spotlight on Tower Health’s Mobile Mammography Coach

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, with 1 in 8 women developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Mammogram screenings are the first line of defense in detecting early signs of breast cancer. Early detection is important because there are more treatment options and a better chance for survival. However, women often face barriers that lead to delays in receiving this life-saving preventative care.

IRS mandates require not-for-profit hospitals and health systems to conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) every three years to help these organizations identify and address the health challenges in the areas that they serve. Reading Hospital’s 2019 and 2022 CHNAs identified access to care and disease prevention and management as top community needs. The data uncovered barriers and disparities to community members receiving care, including preventative screenings such as mammograms.

After more than 2 years of planning, Reading Hospital, through the hard work of the Reading Hospital Foundation and generosity of many individuals and community partners, unveiled its Mobile Mammography Coach. A vital resource for Reading Hospital and the women of Berks County, the first community outreach event was held on September 12, 2022.  The goal of this initiative is to make mammography screening easier, faster, and more convenient for our community members by bringing the service to where they live, work, or play.
